Disk defragmenter FAQ

What is fragmentation?
When your programs are saved on your hard disk in a discontinuous way, it is said to be fragmented. Hard disks get fragmented by time and the amount of fragments depend on how much you use your computer. Read more about disk fragmentation.

What is disk defrag?
The process of rearranging the programs on the hard disk in a continuous way is called disk defrag.

Why do I need to defragment my disks?
You need to defragment your disks because fragmentation slows down your computer considerably, since Windows must find all the pieces of the fragmented file (which is spread all around the hard disk) in order to load it.

Why do I need a disk defragmenter software?
If you want to do your disk defrag as efficient as possible and as easy as click-and-go-to-bed, then you need this software.

How often should I defrag my disks?
An average user needs to defrag disk once monthly. However if you use your computer about 7 hour per day, you will need to defrag your disks every three weeks.

What is the significance of removing Windows pagefile (swapfile) before a disk defrag?
pagefile (swapfile) is a large file used by Windows to store some temporary data. Through shrinking and expanding Windows pagefile (swapfile) gets spread all around the hard disk in a discontinuous way. Thus it prevents your files to be defragmented optimally.

Why is it important to clean hard disk before disk defrag (Plus versions only)?
Firstly, defragmenting junk/temp files like Temporary Internet Files (often about 500 MB), index.dat files, etc. is waste of time. Secondly These files prevent other files to be defragmented optimally. Read more about disk cleanup.

What is Defragmenter Lite/Pro/Plus designed for?
Defragmenter Lite/Pro is designed to overcome several problems encountered usually during a disk defrag process.
  • Screen saver interferes the disk defrag. As a result the process has to restart and the disk defrag progress drops to 0%. The Drive's contents changed: restarting ... message displayed during a disk defrag, refers to this problem.
  • Running applications like your installed programs (firewall, anti-virus, ... software) or Windows service programs (Print Spooler, Windows Audio, ...) interfere the disk defrag. As a result the process has to restart and the disk defrag progress drops to 0%. The Drive's contents changed: restarting ... message displayed during a disk defrag, refers to this problem.
  • Windows pagefile (swapfile) spread all around the hard disk prevents your programs to be rearranged in a continuous way. Thus the disk defrag results will be dissatisfactory and will add little to the performance of your PC.
  • Your disk drives contain errors and need to be repaired prior to any disk defrag. As a result the disk defrag process stops and the following message will be displayed. Windows cannot defragment this drive because it contains errors that ...
  • During the whole process of disk defrag which might take about an hour, you must be around and click Ok, Yes and similar buttons to keep the disk defrag process going.

Can't I just use the defrag utility provided with Windows?
Of course you can use Windows Defrag utility, but that's only step 5 of the 8 steps performed by Defragmenter Lite/Pro.

Which are the steps performed by Defragmenter Lite/Pro/Plus?
There are 8 steps required for a complete and efficient disk defrag:
  • Clean up disk.
  • Disable and remove the pagefile (swapfile).
  • Disable running applications.
  • Run Windows/DOS Scan disk.
  • Run Windows/DOS Defrag Disk.
  • Run Abexo Disk Optimizer.
  • Set the pagefile (swapfile).
  • Enable running applications.
  • Shutdown/Restart Windows.

How do I configure Abexo defragmenter?
Under "Options" you will find:
  • Choose Drives: Select the drive(s) which you want to defrag.
  • Disk Cleanup (Plus versions only): It is recommended to select all of the cleanup options.
  • Miscellany: Here you may omit some of the steps of the operation, such as defragmentation if your disk is already defragmented and you only want to optimize the disk for best performance.
  • Optimization: Here you can choose the exact optimization procedures. For instance if you have huge free disk space you might want to omit disk consolidation.
  • Final Step: This is the action which Abexo defragmenter will take when all tasks are done. Here you can invoke Abexo Registry Cleaner to carry on automatic operations.

What is Abexo Disk Optimizer?
Abexo Disk Optimizer arranges the already defragmented data on the disk for best performance.

The available options are:
  • Move directories close to top of drive: Directories are accessed by Windows often and should be placed near top of the drive where disk access is fastest.
  • Move files out of MFT area:MFT (Master File Table) is a reserved system area. If you run out of free space Windows will place some of the files in this area.
  • Create free space near top of drive: As mentioned before disk access is fastest near top of the drive. Therefore we create some free space in that area for temporary files which are written and read frequently.
  • Final defragmentation: After above-mentioned optimizations some of the files will become fragmented. This step is to defragment those files.
  • Consolidate files and free spaces: This will make place for new files and prevent too fast fragmentation. This step is only usefull if you have a small disk.

What can I use the command line feature for (Pro versions only)?
This feature lets you run Defragmenter Pro programmatically and without the need for its GUI (Graphical User Interface) or any mouse-clicks for automation purposes. For instance you can schedule running Defragmenter Pro with Windows Task Scheduler, or in a LAN you can use a batch file (scripting) to run Defragmenter Pro on workstations upon authentication.

How can I use the command line feature (Pro versions only)?
The command line takes only one parameter. All of your chosen preferences in Settings windows will take effect.

Example: C:\Progra~1\Abexo\addp\adpp.exe auto

Can Abexo defragmenters and Abexo Registry Cleaner work together for further automation?
Yes, in "Final Step" under "Options" of defragmenter choose Call Abexo Registry Cleaner. When all tasks are completed defragmenter will call Abexo Registry Cleaner which after performing registry optimization tasks will restart or shut down your computer.

How do I connect Abexo defragmenter to Abexo Registry Cleaner?

Launch Abexo Registry Cleaner, click the "Registry Cleanup" button, in the next window select any number of cleanup options and click the "Back" button to return to the main window.

Now click the "Auto Run" button, in the next window select which tasks you want to be performed and what to do on completions, then click the "Back" button to return to the main window. Click the "Exit" button.

Finally launch Abexo defragmenter, click "Options" then "Final Step" and select the "Call Abexo Registry Cleaner" option.

Now every time you run Abexo defragmenter it will after defragmentation call Abexo Registry Cleaner.

What are the minimum requirements to run Abexo Defragmenters?
Abexo Defragmenters run on Windows 98/ME/2000/XP and don't have any significant system requirement.

I used your defragmenter software but it hung.
If Defragmenter hangs or the progress percentage drops constantly, try one of the Plus versions and make sure you tick all of the cleanup check boxes. However if you still have problem running Defragmenter you will need to format your hard disk and reinstall Windows.

I used your defragmenter software and now Windows complains about insufficient memory (pre version 1.2).
If Defragmenter terminates prematurely, your computer settings like pagefile (swapfile) will not be restored. So DO NOT cancel or interrupt the scan disk and defrag process. If in case you notice the 'insufficient memory' problem, here is the cure:
Launch defragmenter, click the Settings button and finally click the Reset Pagefile.

When I start Abexo defragmenter software my computer boots, a DOS box opens and then nothing is happening (Windows XP users).
Do not close this DOS box. It's indicating that defragmentation is in progress. It will be closed automatically when the defrag process is finished.
